	South East London Combined Heat and Power Energy Recovery Facility The immense size of the incinerator is difficult to appreciate as it dwarfs all around it (click on the image to see a larger version). In the third image at 'C' you can see the railway arch again. SELCHP is a major incineration  plant located in London. SELCHP is an acronym for "South East London Combined Heat and Power" energy recovery facility. The combined heat and power system was designed for a district heating scheme that has never been implemented and the plant generates only electricity. The plant can generate up to 35 MW of power using a steam turbine. It can take up to 420,000 tonnes per year of municipal solid waste. In 2002 SELCHP was subject to direct action by Greenpeace UK. They were concerned about the potential negative health effects of the dioxins produced during the incineration of waste at the site. The plant was shut down for three and a half days when protesters entered the main tipping hall and climbed the chimney. As a result of the action both Liberal Democrats on Lewisham council and the then Shadow Environment Secretary Peter Ainsworth pledged their support to the campaign.

SL3 0EG This is about the same size as the proposed incinerator for Ware, at over 400,000 tonnes of waste being burned each year. This makes it comparable to Biffa's proposal. It can be seen at junction 15 on the M25, and for miles around. Do we really want one of these dominating the skyline over Ware, Hertford and the surrounding countryside? Update .. This incinerator is being allowed to burn more radioactive waste and council chiefs are powerless to stop it. The news has been met by strong objection from Slough Borough Council which was not even consulted. Read more..
